I was into Quetico for my very first time. I hadn't even been into Algonquin closer to home or paddled a canoe at this point in my life. I had done the car camping in places like the Pinery near Grand Bend but this, Quetico, it was all new and while exhilerating I was afriaid of everything. Waves, even the tiny ones, being in the middle of a lake in a canoe, the noises in the dark outside the tent at night. This was the second day and we had just finished the Sue Falls portage which is a long, hard portage and its uphill both ways. I remember squinting into the sunlight, hearing voices but not being able to see this pair of canoeists heading towards the portage I was standing on. It was a very amazing moment when my eyes had adjusted to the light and to watch them come towards us, the rhythmic motion of their paddle strokes, the sunlight catching their paddles wet surface, glinting , flashing as they moved at a strong steady pace. The water itself was adazzle with the noon day sun and it was a gloriously beautiful day.
