Quetico Haiku, watercolour, 10 inches x 16 inches, 2013

I had risen early that morning at first light. The fly of the tent was open and an opportunity to observe the mist I could see from my prone sleeping bag position was all that I needed to get up when nothing else or no one else stirred. We were camped on a sand point seven days in on a two week canoe and portage trip of Quetico. I walked the shore of the point bare foot taking photographs as I walked. Just the dog and I this morning and he wasn't the least bit interested in what I was doing.  It was just a little after five. There was silence and the sun was up over the tall pines that fringed the bay and just a bit of breeze nudged the surface of the water. My senses bristled with pleasure that morning as this   symphony of nature, light, water and the moving air played out, seemingly just for me. I was just about out to the tip of the sand spit where the sand gave way to the fronds of wild rice growing and then the deep blue of the channel that separated us from a couple of large islands when I spotted these stalks of wild rice growing separate from the mass further out, I liked the simpleness of the scene and it's always a pleasure to share these wilderness moments with others. These kinds of mornings are magical with their poetic kind of light and for me light and capturing those poetic qualities are the reason I paint.
