Presquile Dawn, watercolour, 14 x 18 inches, 2007

It was in 1988 while camping at Presquile Provincial Park, I walked the shores of Lake Ontario. I remember walking through the campgrounds, there was a fine mist in the air and nothing stirred. No one or creature was up, children’s toys lay scattered about, unlit barbeques, lids shut tight, unoccupied silent lawn chairs arranged in conversant circles and trailer curtains were still drawn.  My footprints marked my passage, a dark crease through the dew soaked grass. It was just before five and although the sun’s ambient light lit everything in its soft morning glow it in of itself had not risen above the treeline. I found this spot along the shore and waited for the sun to rise and took a series of photographic studies and wrote colour notes. This scene where the sunlight is breaking through the trees and a bank of mist still shrouding the lake to the east was that perfect moment for this painting.
