These offshore islands in Georgian Bay are indicative of the water and wind worn granite outcroppings that dot the shoreline from Tobermory to Lions Head, Honey Harbour, Waubaushene, Parry Sound northward to the French River delta, Killarney and Manitoulin Island. A list of names that conjures up long hot summers, power craft scooting across cool, cool waters and wooden cottage vaults with that smell of dried wood, children's laughter and family stories trapped in its pores. On this day that this painting captures it was a marvelous, idyllic afternoon with the warming sun bright overhead and wispy clouds sailing upon its pale blue sky. We were out with friends when this island appeared a blue slash on the horizon and as we drew closer its form of worn granite and wind twisted pines emerged. We stepped out here for a bit to stretch our legs and for me I was immediately enthralled. It was a cornucopia of visual delight and exploration which culminated in this "She Lay Like A Jewel."
