West of Eden, serigraph, 49 colours, 44 x 30 inches, edition size 300

this is one of the most masterful of my serigraphs that I ever created. The whole edition took about three months of work and I was working with a printmaker at the time, John Lawson.

I did my first canoe and portage of Quetico in 1986 and this is a scene of Quetico Lake from that first of what are now innumerable trips into this forested wilderness area. It depicts Quetico Lake looking towards the literal interpretation of this image, "Eden Island." Quetico weather is a cauldron of weather fronts that come from the prairies, the southern U.S., the Great Lakes and the Arctic. They all clash here. In this image there is a high pressure cell with wispy cirrus clouds high overhead while slipping in underneath it is a low pressure cell going in the opposite direction. Most of the time that I've travelled I've enjoyed the rapture of absolutely gorgeous weather but every now and then the weather has a tantrum and I've experienced the rain driven through the fabric of the tent in a fine mist by a hard driving rainstorm. It is part of the experience though and this scene for me is still evocative of the wilderness experience.

When Equinox magazine was in publication this serigraph and Opeongo Red were part of the magazine's yearly Enviromental Achievement Award. It was given to an individual chosen by the readership of the magazine that had made a significant contribution to the protection of the environment.
