this scene at McLellan Park depicts a scene found in almost every community in the winter months. It is a depiction of this simple winter pastime, tobogganing and sledding. The different types of sledders are represented in this painting. The watchers at the bottom of the hill, watching their charges as they sail screaming down the hill, then there's the one filled with excited anticipation, holding onto their choice of sliding devices, waiting for the others, the trudge up the hill, parents pulling their youngest, still not strong enough to get to the top, the first timers, the ones waiting, watching the others go first, standing at the top looking with some trepidation down the slope, the screams of delight of the downhill sliders as they careen down the slope and actually a few are in control while some twirl, laughing, getting glimpses of their mortal souls and views of the top and bottom of the hill, a simple wonderful way to spend time, singly, in a group or as a family.

I used to love to do this this with my brother Wayne when I was a kid and later as a father passed that passion along to my children. We spent countless Saturdays when I would pick up the their friends and sliding devices, pack them into the van and head to my favourite hill. We laughed and screamed with delight as we hurtled down the hills on a crazy carpet, a saucer or my personal favourite, a toboggan where we all went down the hill together, a mass of legs, billowy winter coats and snowpants at Lakeside Park. Reaching the bottom we all rolled laughing off the toboggan, turned looked at the hill, "smiled and thought to ourselves, lets do it again" and walked back up the hill.
