Footsteps of a Thousand Voyageurs, watercolour, 16 x 22 inches

this scene is twilight at the mouth of the Little Pic River in Nyes Provincial Park. There is a time of twilight just after the sun sets when the earth settles into a somnolent mood. It is a time when everything seems to slow down, the voices of children loud in their shrill calls of delight and play slowly become quieter, a hush settles over a community of voyageurs who in their various  portable abodes have found escape here, for a night, a few days and for some a week of settling into a circadian lifestyle. The sun will recede completely, the light, the twilight will dim and as night settles the smoke of campfires will slowly permeate this prodigal community. This is only begrudingly momentary for these transient inhabitants, for the cities will once again claim them like the prodigal child returning home. For this time though,  in this summer ritual it is a marvelous redemption from the toils of a modern lifestyle. For those of you who have traveled thusly you will understand and feel that longing in your heart to be once again with your summer paramour.
