Northern Compass, oil on canvas, 48 x 52 inches, 2006
Quetico is a large wilderness preserve west of the great lakes that is a favoured place to spend time. The title refers to the canoe being on the water like the needle on a compass. It is the direction that the canoe points that we travel.
On this morning that I took notes and photographic studies the sun was just breaking through the mist and cloud. We were preparing to try our luck at fishing and we were the only ones that disturbed the stillness that morning for as we paddled the lake we saw no one.
There was a breath taking moment when a bald eagle, wings spread wide in a soundless glide about thirty feet over our heads swooped low to the water a couple of hundred feet in front of us, taloned claws extended splashing the smooth curtain of the still surface and then with powerful wings beating the air struggling to get air borne, a writhing fish in its clasp. Wow, what a moment.
