Beaverhouse Portage, watercolour, 10 x 14 inches, 2007
Many of my trips of Quetico have begun on Beaverhouse Lake, an access point on the eastern edges just off the trans Canada highway. This was painted from photographs I took on my very first trip from Beaverhouse in 1995. This swift moving spot of water has to be portaged around to access the portage that bypasses the rapids on the Quetico River which empties into Beaverhouse from Quetico Lake. It was for me another perfect moment of a perfect blue sky, a hint of cumulous clouds adding texture and the lake receding away ino the distance. This portage starts to break down the tension of our city lives and moving across it and heading down the Quetico River to Quetico Lake begins what for me ois truly wonderful yearly experience.
