Moose Meadow, watercolour, 10 x 16 inches.

It was my first trip into Quetico and it was our third day in. We had paddled the first day into the wind all day long. It had been an arduous and exhausting one and had me second guessing about being in the woods for two weeks. Having never experienced a wilderness trip I had no idea if the first days trials were a precursor to the whole trip. It settled down that third day and my fears were allayed. We paddled the length of Cirrus and were ready to do the short portage the next day into Quetico Lake. That short hop portage sits behind the island. The campsite on this our second night was a sand beach that was trampled with the hoof prints of moose, tracks that disappeared in the water in a vast field of water lillies, something that moose have a voracious appetetite for. The title is derived from that and although it was obvious that this spot was frequentd by these ginormous animals we saw no fresh evidence of them that evening as we pitched our tents, made supper and sat back watched the sun set and enjoyed the star splashed black canvas of a Quetico night.
